In May of 2017 I woke to what sounded a bit like a shout coming from my backyard. After a confused search I realized it was coming from the branches of my Royal Poinciana.
Which is when I learned that peafowls like to sleep perched high up and will do so even in urban settings if there’s a convenient tree. I also learned that they howl or screech whenever something out of the norm occurs in their environment. Peacocks (as opposed to the female peahens) also make a distinctive hoot when they mate, which happens from March through September.

So it turned out our interloper was a peacock, but we never figured out if it was disturbed (which would not surprise me one bit in this city) or trying to attract a mate. Now for the funny part…knowing next to nothing about peafowls at the time, I thought it was stuck and that’s why it was making those noises. So I called a local wildlife removal service to come help. The guy asked me some questions on the phone and immediately knew what was going on. And that’s how I learned what little I know about peafowls. He’s probably still laughing.
